DFS Classification

• DFS Classification (M, Satyanarayanan from the perspective of FS design & computing model can be classified into 4 levels)
  • Single user single process, example:IBM PC-DOS & Apple Macintosh
  • Single user multi-processes, example:OS/2
  • Multi-users share data, example:Unix is the archetype of a timesharing FS
  • Multi-user physically dispersed in a network of autonomous computers share in the use of a common FS, example:Distributed FS

  • example: NFS, AFS(Andrew FS)
• 1990-1995
  • example: xFS, Tiger Shark, Petal Frangipani, SFS(Science FS)
• 1995-2000
  • example: GFS, GPFS, DiFFS, CXFS, HighRoad, qFS, XNFS
• 2000~
  • PanFS, Lustre
